Week 6th – 10th April
2015
The week
began with a special assembly whereby Ms EustaciaLafortune, participant in the
Miss Seychelles Island contest, delivered her speech then launched the week and
sponsored reading. It is to be noted that Ms Lafortune was one of our past
student and that her Miss Seychelles Island project is based on reading.
Then, also
during the assembly Ms Eustacia made a presentation of about 50 books to the
school library sponsored by Abhaye Valabji. The books were accepted by Mrs
Christine Chetty, our school librarian.
We then
invited Mr Michael Antoine to deliver his speech to the assembly.
After the
assembly, we proceeded with the opening of an exhibition in the SEN room. Ms
Eustacia and Mr Antoine had the honour of opening the exhibition. The
exhibition was all about reading and the apparatus were all produced by
students during their English and French classes. There were also some leaflets
and posters donated by Ms Lafortune.
During the
6th period Ms Lafortune joined Ms Christine in the library for some
activities with the S2B1 students. Students were demonstrated how to care for
books and also had the opportunity to create some bookmarks. The activities
were very much appreciated by the students.
After that,
Ms Lafortune had the opportunity to assist a class where the teacher was
conducting a session about book review.
On the 2nd
day (7th April) there was a session on’Internet Browsing’ to
demonstrate to students how to look/download books from the internet. The
session which was originally to be conducted by Mr Francois Henri, was
conducted by Ms Uma Subramanian since Mr Francois was on compassionate leave
due to the loss of his wife the day before. We were supposed to have a session
with a special group from Ms Lyra’sEnglish class but it was not done due to the
fact that a group of teachers (DHT, Librarians, HOD language,SENCO) had to
attend the official launching of the reading week at ESPACE onMahe.
Also during
the week, language teachers organised activities with their classes to show to
students the importance and ‘fun’ of reading. The activities varied from
storytelling, quiz, poems etc...
To mark the
end of this week, we attended an afternoon of activities at the National
Library(GrandAnsePraslin) with a group of students. There, all schools on
Praslin were represented; the BSA primary, G.A primary and Praslin Secondary.
The
activities began by a speech from Mrs Irma Pool, the head librarian. Then we
hada poem to show the evolution of reading ‘Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow’, by
two secondary students.
It was
followed by storytelling by Baie Ste Anne primary school. We then had a quizinvolving
two schools : the BSA and the S1 of Praslin Secondary, whereby the Praslin
secondary school came out victorious. It has to be noted that both schools
demonstrated a good knowledge of a variety of books.
To
demonstrate the importance of reading in today’s society, a sketch was
presented by students from G.A primary and secondary school. It was made clear
that today people tend to make more use of the new technologies available for
reading.
To crown it
all, three students read a special pledge in the three national languages and
the others repeated it. They promised for the love of Seychelles to visit the
National Library and read at least once a week.
Remarks:
In general
we were very satisfied with the activities since it was a first. We feel
nonetheless that there are still room for improvement especially on the level
of organisation. We should prepare well in advance so that things will run
smoothly next time.
We feel
that we should set up a committee especially for ‘Reading‘ so that we can
promote reading throughout the year.
We are
happy that we got everybody to participate in this year’s activities since we observed
in the past, that people tend to associate reading only
with library.
Participation;
Students
and teachers alike were keen to participate in the activities. However, we feel
disappointed since we invited 20 parents for the special assembly and got the
presence of only two. We feel that whatever we do for the school and our
students, parents are not behind us to give us their support which is very
unfortunate.
Way
Forward;
1. There will be a setting up of a
committee which will have the mandate to keep reading activities flowing
throughout the year, and also together we will look for strategies to get the
community, especially the parents to join and participate with us.
2. Better preparation/organisation of
activities.
3. Get the whole school, not only the
language department, to participate in the activities. Reading concerns all the subjects!
4. Raise fund to cater for prizes for
students participating in the activities and to buy more books for the library.
PLEDGES
For the love
of Seychelles I promise that I will encourage my friends to visit the National
Library to improve our knowledge.

A partir d’Aujourd’hui, pour l’amour

Minutes of librarian meeting held on Monday
20th April 2015.

Telma Barbe
Irma Pool
Edwidge Joubert
Aline Jean
Review of reading festival activities organised
in collaboration with the National Library staff.
All members
agreed that the activities wereworth, they were interesting though we had only
one week preparation.
Ms Pool
from the National library reported that thanks to our activities, with SBC
coverage, she has new clients visiting the national library.
We agreed
to start earlier next year and to keep closer link with the national library.
The Praslin
secondary school had representatives from the management who were present for
the activities, while at primary level no one was present. Aline said that at
her school few staff were absent and had a meeting scheduled.
Next time
we will have to invite few parents due to lack of space at the National Library.
The meeting
ended at 12:30pm.
